What Is Neurodiversity?

It also recognizes that many of the challenges faced by neurodivergent individuals are the result of societal barriers and discrimination rather than inherent flaws in their neurology.

When is Autism Typically Diagnosed?

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is typically diagnosed in early childhood, with most children diagnosed between 2 and 4. However, some children may not be diagnosed until later in childhood or adulthood.

Early signs of autism can often be detected in infancy, such as delayed or absent babbling, lack of response to their name, and avoiding eye contact. As children with ASD age, they may have difficulty with social interaction, communication, and repetitive behaviors.

A diagnosis of ASD is typically made through a comprehensive evaluation that includes observation, developmental history, and standardized assessments. The review is usually conducted by professionals, such as a developmental pediatrician, psychologist, speech-language pathologist, and occupational therapist.

Early diagnosis and intervention are essential for helping children with ASD reach their full potential. Early intervention services, such as speech and occupational therapy, can help address the developmental delays and challenges associated with ASD and improve outcomes for children with this condition.

What Causes Autism?

The exact cause of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is not fully understood, but research suggests that it is likely caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors.

Genetic factors appear to play a significant role, as autism tends to run in families. Certain genetic mutations, such as those that affect the formation and function of synapses, have been linked to an increased risk of ASD.

Environmental factors may also contribute to the development of autism, such as prenatal exposure to toxins or certain medications. Some research has also suggested a possible link between autism and maternal immune system activation during pregnancy.

It’s important to note that vaccines do not cause autism, despite persistent myths to the contrary. Multiple large-scale studies have found no evidence of a link between vaccines and autism.

Every 7 minutes a child is bullied. Bullying is a terrible, frightening experience that can also cause lasting harm, long after the behavior has stopped. Approximately 1 in 5 children are bullied in hallways, classrooms and during school related activities each year.
