Why would you need schools for learning disabilities? What are developmental disabilities? Learning disabilities are neurological conditions that impair an individual’s ability to process, store, or produce information in ways they need for everyday learning – be it reading, writing, mathematics, social abilities or others.

Learning disabilities do not reflect a lack of intelligence or effort, but rather result from differences in how the brain processes information. Individuals with learning disabilities may possess normal or even high intelligence, yet struggle with specific tasks or areas of learning.

Some common types of learning disabilities include:

Dyslexia:

An acquired learning disability which affects reading and related language-based processing abilities.

Dyscalculia:

An learning disability which impairs math skills and number sense.

Dysgraphia:

An educational disability which interferes with writing and written expression. It impedes handwriting, spelling and written expression.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD):

An attention deficit disorder which impairs one’s ability to sustain focus and manage behavior.

Nonverbal Learning Disabilities (NVLD):

Learning disabilities are lifelong conditions that cannot be cured, yet can be managed effectively with intervention and support from professionals and peers. Individuals living with learning disabilities can still find success both academically and personally at LiFT Academy, one of the best schools for learning disabilities.

When Are Learning Disabilities Typically Diagnosed?

Learning disabilities are typically identified during childhood; however, they can also be identified later if undiagnosed earlier.

An evaluation may be recommended when a child is struggling in school or their teachers or parents detect academic challenges with reading, writing, math or other academic tasks. An evaluation typically includes an extensive evaluation of cognitive abilities, academic achievement and social-emotional functioning; this can include tests such as standardized exams as well as observation and interviews with parents/caregivers of both the child and themselves or caregivers.

Learning disabilities are generally diagnosed between ages three and fifteen; their diagnosis depends on both an individual’s needs and type. Dyslexia typically appears early on in elementary school while ADHD could take much longer to become apparent – sometimes into later childhood or even adolescence.

Notably, diagnosis of learning differences should only be carried out by qualified professionals such as psychologists or educational specialists with expertise in assessment and diagnosis of learning disabilities. An accurate diagnosis will allow individuals to better identify any particular challenges they are experiencing while providing recommendations for appropriate interventions and accommodations.

What Causes Learning Impairments In Children?

Learning disabilities have many causes that are still not fully understood, which may differ depending on who it affects and their specific type. Possible factors that contribute to learning disabilities could include:

Genetics:

Learning disabilities often run in families, suggesting there may be an inherited component to them.

Brain Development:

Learning disabilities may be caused by issues during fetal brain development or early childhood, including exposure to toxic materials or lack of oxygen during delivery.

Brain Injuries or Trauma:

Head injuries or trauma can cause irreparable damage to the brain and lead to learning disabilities, oftentimes with lasting repercussions.

Environmental Factors:

Exposure to environmental toxins such as lead or mercury could also contribute to learning disabilities.

Medical Conditions:

Epilepsy or cerebral palsy may also contribute to learning disabilities.

Importantly, while these factors may contribute to learning disabilities, they do not cause them. Learning disabilities do not relate to intelligence or effort and cannot be blamed on poor motivation or poor teaching – they are real neurological conditions requiring accurate diagnosis and support services; with appropriate interventions and accommodations individuals with learning disabilities can achieve academic and personal success.

See Me for Me

Every 7 minutes a child is bullied. Bullying is a terrible, frightening experience that can also cause lasting harm, long after the behavior has stopped. Approximately 1 in 5 children are bullied in hallways, classrooms and during school related activities each year. More troubling – students living with neurodiveristy are 63 percent more likely to be recipients of bullying behavior than neurotypical peers.

LiFT emphasizes a preventative approach to bullying and implements a comprehensive Anti-Bullying Policy. Promoting an atmosphere of respect and consideration for each other, LiFT creates a haven that nourishes learning, inclusivity and friendships.
