What is Autism?

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects an individual’s ability to communicate, socialize, and engage in everyday activities. Autism is a spectrum disorder, which means that it affects individuals differently, and symptoms can range from mild to severe.

Autism is typically diagnosed in early childhood, with symptoms usually appearing by the age of 2 or 3. Common symptoms of autism include difficulty with social interaction, communication, and repetitive behaviors or interests. Children with autism may struggle with making eye contact, understanding social cues, developing friendships, and communicating verbally or non-verbally.

While the exact cause of autism is unknown, it is believed to be caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Autism affects about 1 in 54 children in the United States, and early diagnosis and intervention can greatly improve outcomes for individuals with autism.

What is Neurodiversity

Neurodiversity is a concept that describes the natural variation in human brain function and behavior. It recognizes that the human brain operates differently in different individuals, and this diversity is a natural and valuable aspect of human variation. The neurodiversity movement emphasizes that people with neurological differences, such as autism, ADHD, dyslexia, Tourette syndrome, and others, should be accepted and respected for who they are, rather than being stigmatized or pathologized. It promotes the idea that these differences are not disorders, but rather represent a unique and valuable aspect of human diversity, and that society should focus on accommodating these differences and promoting inclusion rather than trying to “fix” or eliminate them. The neurodiversity movement has influenced many fields, including education, employment, and social policy, to recognize and embrace the strengths and talents of individuals with neurological differences and create more inclusive and accepting environments for them.

Who are Eligible for Neurodiversity?

Neurodiversity refers to the idea that neurological differences, such as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), ADHD, dyslexia, and Tourette syndrome, are a natural variation in human cognition and should be recognized and respected as such. Therefore, anyone who has a neurological difference is eligible for recognition as part of the neurodiverse community.

However, it is important to note that not all individuals with neurological differences identify with the neurodiversity movement or consider themselves part of the neurodiverse community. Ultimately, it is up to each individual to determine their own identity and whether or not they wish to identify as part of the neurodiverse community.

Can Individuals With ASD Lead Successful Lives?

Yes, individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) can lead successful lives in many different ways. While ASD may present some unique challenges, individuals with ASD also have many strengths and talents that can contribute to their success.

With the proper support, accommodations, and opportunities, individuals with ASD can excel in various fields, including art, music, science, technology, and more. Many individuals with ASD have succeeded in careers such as engineering, computer programming, writing, and even entrepreneurship.

In addition to professional success, individuals with ASD can lead fulfilling personal lives, including forming close relationships with family and friends, pursuing hobbies and interests, and participating in their communities.

It is essential to recognize that success looks different for everyone and may only sometimes be measured in traditional ways. With understanding, support, and opportunities, individuals with ASD can thrive and lead successful, fulfilling lives.

See Me for Me

Every 7 minutes a child is bullied. Bullying is a terrible, frightening experience that can also cause lasting harm, long after the behavior has stopped. Approximately 1 in 5 children are bullied in hallways, classrooms and during school related activities each year. More troubling – students living with neurodiveristy are 63 percent more likely to be recipients of bullying behavior than neurotypical peers.

LiFT emphasizes a preventative approach to bullying and implements a comprehensive Anti-Bullying Policy. Promoting an atmosphere of respect and consideration for each other, LiFT creates a haven that nourishes learning, inclusivity and friendships.
